Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy

WHAT IS EFP?

Equine-Facilitated psychotherapy (EFP) is an interactive process in which a licensed mental health professional working with or as a credentialed equine professional partners with suitable equines to address psychotherapy goal (developed by the mental health professional and client).

THE HORSE’S ROLE

The equine is an important partner in the work of EFP. Equines are very sensitive to their surroundings, including the emotions of people. The horses react and respond differently to people based on the person’s emotional state. This provides valuable information for the person and therapist and an opportunity for skill building for the client.

In addition, the client’s relationship with the horse can facilitate trust-building, improve communication skills, and increase therapeutic engagement. The horse provides a non-judgmental mirror by which the client can gain self-awareness, identify unhelpful patterns, and be motivated to change.

BENEFITS

Research indicates that EFP can be helpful in treating depression, anxiety, behavioral issues, attachment disorders, attention-deficit disorder, substance abuse, eating disorders, trauma and abuse, and relationship and communication problems.
